STONE CARE

  Caring for your natural stone

Annual application of sealant is strongly recommended for granite countertops. Quartz surfaces do not require sealant or any other maintenance. You’ll find caring for your natural stone easy. Warm water, mild dishwashing liquid and a soft, clean cloth are generally all that you’ll need to maintain most natural stone surfaces.

  Floors

Mop interior floors frequently using a clean, non-treated dry dust mop. Mats and area rugs inside and outside the entrance will help minimize sand, dirt and grit that could scratch the floor and do most of the damage to natural stone surfaces due to their abrasiveness. Be sure the underside of the mat or rug is a non-slip surface. Do not use vacuum cleaners that are worn: the metal or plastic attachment or the wheels may scratch the surface.

  Bath and other wet surfaces

In the bath or other wet areas, soap scum can be minimized by using a squeegee after each use. To remove soap scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover or other mild cleaning solutions. Use of ammonia solution may dull the surface of the stone.

  Food preparation surfaces

In food preparation areas, the stone may need to have a penetrating sealer installed. Granite & Marble Natural Stone Inc. seals your granite upon installation. Resealing is recommended annually. Sealant can be purchased at any natural stone retailer. Simply follow the instructions on the sealer container. Sealers are non-toxic and safe for use on food preparation surfaces. If spills occur, promptly wipe off with cloth. Do not leave unwrapped food on the countertops.

Protect countertop surfaces with coasters or placemats
  Other surfaces.

Clean stone surfaces with a few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap or a mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a clean mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces for best results. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar or other acids on natural stones. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and dry with a soft cloth. Change the water frequently. Don’t use scouring powders or creams – these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.
